The Blackbird Academy’s classroom is a recording studio with workstations for 30 students. The room’s main recording system features an API 1608 console, two iso booths, Pro Tools HD, a patchbay, and three 65″ TVs. Each student workstation features Pro Tools, a Universal Audio Apollo interface, every plugin in the UAD-2 collection and more. Students will be able to simultaneously record the same audio as the instructor, edit, process and mix at their desk, then play back their mixes on the main speakers for evaluation. Gear from the extensive Blackbird Studio collection will be brought in for clinics, tracking and overdubs, providing access to the same gear used to make records every day by top engineers, artists and producers.
In July of 2013, the room was featured on Katie Couric’s show Katie, showing a complete room makeover by NY designers Bob and Cortney Novogratz. The husband and wife design team are known worldwide from their Bravo docu-series 9 by Design as well as Home by Novogratz on HGTV. The couple have twice been profiled in The New York Times and have been featured in such publications as Real Simple, Better Homes & Gardens, Travel + Leisure, American Way, Oprah’s O, Architectural Digest and Star, among many others.
The desks were custom designed by SetCo Inc., who have done set and stage design for the top names in music. Each desk features a Mac Mini, monitor, keyboard, headphones, desktop USB and power access and drawer for storage. Students will be seated on custom, re-upholstered, Roc N Soc Lunar series drum thrones with backs, footrests, casters, and gas lift height adjustment.
